Character: Gareki
Series: Karneval
Character Age: 15
Canon: Who doesn't love the Circus? The lights, the costumes, the delicious treats, the chance to defend your country from mutant cannibals— wait, what? Welcome to Karneval, where your friendly traveling showmen are also government agents charged with tracking down the members of a mysterious group of mad scientists known as Kafka. Gareki isn't a member of Circus yet, but he'd like to be. After years of living as a thief, a chance encounter with a boy named Nai set his destiny on a very different path. Now he’s learning about government secrets, the horrors of Kafka, and not so coincidentally the power of teamwork.
Although initially standoffish, quick to anger, and only willing to look out for himself, Gareki eventually begins to accept Circus' Second Ship as his home. He wishes for the strength to defend his newfound friends, even going so far as to enroll in the Circus Course at a government school. Truthfully, Gareki was never as angry or self-interested as he seemed. All the money he stole was going straight to his terminally ill grandfather-figure, while easily half of his blowups are more embarrassment than rage. He's just kind of a textbook tsundere that way. While he will always have a short fuse, he is trying to learn humility and a better attitude. He just can’t always keep from getting a little snappy.
Tell us about yourself in a few words.
My name is Gareki. Kuronomei Academy sent me here for your supplemental training program, whatever that means. Anyway, I'm studying to be a part of Circus and I want to complete the course and get my license as quickly as I can.
Why are you joining our happy community?
Look, you might not mean anything by it, but could you not put it that way? This is a training camp. I'm not here to be part of anybody's circle of friends. Like I said, I want to get out of the program and back to my— nevermind. I want to get back on board a Circus ship as soon as I can. If I had to pick a community to be part of, it would be theirs. Okay? I'm here to learn what I can and then leave again. Don't get attached to me or anything.
Can you perform a flawless headshot? If not, and if your life depended on it, how many hours a week would you be willing to spend on the shooting range?
... up until recently, I would have said yes without thinking about it. Being confident in your skills can help keep you alive, you know. I guess you could even call it a defense mechanism. Honestly? I would say I'm pretty good at shooting, and I can make lots of other explosives too. But right now I'm here to learn, so I'm not going to be arrogant about anything, even the skills I think I've already mastered. Not until I've earned the right to be, anyway. If you want to test me with a gun, that's fine. I think I'll do all right, but I might not be perfect.
I'm going to be trained with stronger weapons than that though, aren’t I? Guns had better be just the beginning. I know from experience that they aren't a whole lot of help out there in the real world.
Have you committed any crimes you were or should have been convicted from?
I've done things I'm not proud of, but only because I had to. I’m not going to feel guilty about it. Unless you can tell me that everything the government does is totally legal, I don't think it's any of your business anyway. Results are more important, right?
What would you consider to be your "soul" animal and why? (this is for purely scientific purposes and will not have consequences during your stay at all. Trust us! :))
W-What? Why the hell would it? I'm not an animal! And what's with the smiley face, why are you getting all cute at me? How come nobody I know can just be professional? It's not funny, it's annoying. Next question.
Aww, what’s wrong with being cute? Camp is full of adorable things! Like sleepovers and tea parties and dances :)))) You’ll enjoy that, won’t you?
This is a joke, right? No! Is this even a training camp?! That’s it, no more answers from me. I’m done here.
